Before the Rains

The earth under my boots is hard and unyielding, its surface cracked in the heat. Some days here it has topped 40 C, humid air catching and sticking in my lungs. Dust hangs in the air long after a vehicle has passed, and I find myself coughing. Its hot, its dry, and thats about all there is to say on the matter.

I think sometimes I write because I am alone, a foot in two worlds but standing firmly in neither. There is no-one here with whom I can speak unfettered English, nor anyone who can understand the perspective I bring to this place. I talk instead to my computer, and though it, to you. And yet – you are far, far away. I cannot really convey the reality of this place to you any more than I can convey the reality of my other life to people here.

I know that feeling so many times over. It comes in waves though. It helped me to notice the little moments when for some reason people understand even just a little.
