A most specialized subject

I’m back in New Delhi for a few days this week, training on nematode extraction and processing at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute. I spent yesterday siveing soil samples, peering through microscopes, and fiddling with tissue-paper screens that take advantage of osmotic gradients to coax nematodes into clear solutions that are readily viewable.

I also had a rather amusing and totally delicious meal at a nearby restaurant with some of the staff from te IRRI office and others. Two are just back from Kabul, Afganistan, and had some fascinating stories to tell. Apparently NGO work there is demands that one be able to spend at a high rate to keep one’s superiors happy… wierd divisions of oney in developpment work. Still, their work there is important – providing alternatives to heroin produciton for rural Afgan farmers is a key component of changing both the political and humanitarian situaitons.
